FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Date: July 14, 2019
Title: Orange Community Players Presents “Mary Poppins” HILLSBOROUGH NC – The Orange Community Players, a volunteer organization dedicated to bringing quality theatrical productions to the Hillsborough, North Carolina area, will bring “Mary Poppins” to the stage of Cedar Ridge High School in Hillsborough for four performances between July 25th through July 28th.
One of the most popular Disney movies of all time is now capturing hearts in a whole new way as a practically perfect musical. Based on the books by P. L. Travers and the classic Walt Disney film, Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s “Mary Poppins” delighted Broadway audiences for over 2,500 performances and received nominations for nine Olivier and seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
This production is being directed by Wayne Leonard, who is quite well known within theatrical circles here in our area, and he has directed many well-received shows for OCP. “I can think many reasons to love this production,” Leonard said, “but the top three are, first, the story itself. I grew up with the film version of “Mary Poppins,” and it made a lasting, magical impression on me. I knew all the songs. It was wonderfully nostalgic. Then, second, Orange Community Players has managed to get thirty first-time people to be in the show.” OCP President Lisa Woodward explained, “Having so many new people coming out to audition is a healthy sign that our organization is reaching the community and growing.” And finally, concluded Leonard, “There’s Cassandra Clare, who’s playing the part of Mary Poppins. Cassandra is a senior at the prestigious Shenandoah Conservatory in Virginia, majoring in Theater. This young lady looks, moves, and especially, sings just like Mary Poppins.”
Members of the cast in costume recently sang several songs at the “Picnic at the Park” event in Hillsborough. “It was amazing to watch Cassandra’s performance, remarked Woodward. “She had all these spellbound children who were so excited to step up and meet “Mary Poppins.” “And she stayed in character the whole time,” added Leonard, “even when posing with Hillsborough’s mayor, Tom Stevens.”
Tickets are available online at the OCP website: www.ocpnc.com (or at the door for a slightly higher cost).
